Welcome, Great Bears of 2013! This is the wiki I used for a previous presentation on wikis. I will leave the other information within this wiki intact, in case you'd like to read through some of it in order to learn more about wikis. Please CLICK HERE for the page where you should post your research summaries. Welcome, Great Bears!
You will be split up into two classes. Half of you will "attend" class 1 from 9:05-9:35. The other half will attend class 2 during that time. You will then switch, attending the other class until 10:05. My goal is to make you aware of all the ways you could utilize a wiki for education. 10:05-10:30 will be dedicated to showing you a few other examples of uses of wikis, and to discussing things you liked/didn't like about using wikis for the assignments in class 1 and class 2.
NOTE: If you find something on my wiki valuable, you should paste it into a word document for future reference. After the workshop is over, and as we near the beginning of school, I will remove participants from the wiki so that my junior high students may begin using it. If you need help with wikis in the future you can always email me at lizrollans@gmail.com. I’d be glad to help you out.
This is a reminder to show you these things: how to grade, how to set up a free educational wiki, how to add students, public vs. private, etc.
(We can always come up with a more traditional book assignment, if these guidelines cannot be followed.)
Never post any personal information (like your name or address) on this site. Be especially careful of this when you are posting to the discussion board. Address each other by your usernames or team names only.
Act like you are in the classroom. This is not a Facebook page, it is a class assignment. Anything you could get in trouble for at school also applies online. (No bullying, cheating, profanity, harassment, flaming, or destruction of other students' work.) Also, this site is NOT for your personal discussions. Keep it "professional" here.
I can see everything you have written, even if you delete it. If your work accidentally gets deleted, let me know and I will retrieve it for you. This also means that you must participate in the group assignments. I will be grading your work based on your individual contributions, not your groups' total contributions.
There is no spell-check on this wiki. This means that you need to pay attention to your spelling. Everything should be written in complete sentences with correct spelling. Texting language doesn't belong in class assignments.
We are using the wiki so that you can work together on this assignment. Other students WILL edit your work. They will be required to. Use the discussion tab to dispute any changes you don't agree with, be polite, and change it back. You need to be able to work together on this.
Only edit the pages you are assigned to edit. I can look at the history of a page and see who has edited what, so don't be destructive.
This wiki can be as awesome as you make it. If everything goes well this first week, we can continue to use it for other assignments throughout the year. Be creative! Have fun!
